Open Accelerator is a new totally Italian acceleration program in the field of life sciences, which aims to select innovative startups and provide them hospitality, an investment “seed” and a teaching program to help build a business model. To create it was ZCube, Research Venture of Zambon pharmaceutical group, which today published online the selection announcement.
The competition is open from today until April 30 innovative projects of advanced systems of delivery and release of drugs or technologies for the prevention and treatment of diseases. In practice the four areas of focus are: drug delivery systems (using drugs to have the appropriate characteristics for the controlled release and targeted within the body), wearables (wearable devices for chronic diseases), open source prototyping (technology platforms innovative diagnostic devices such as professional and advanced biometric applications) and big data (analysis and exploitation of data enabling the reduction of health costs through more effective diagnosis and detection of personalized medicines).
it is expected the selection of a maximum 20 projects, of which the six considered most deserving will receive a seed investment of up to EUR 100,000 each. The acceleration path will be hosted by campus Open Zone Bresso, with a teaching composed of nine weekly meetings learning and sharing of basic elements of a business model, according to the methodology of the “business model canvas” adopted by various US institutions. The last and tenth stage will be the Pitch Day, during which the teams will present their project and will receive final comments by the Scientific Committee which will decide on which projects to invest.
“Given the vibrancy and the fervor of the Italian market towards startups and innovation, we thought it was the appropriate time to initiate this project,” he told us Roberto Consonni, chairman of ZCube. “It is the outcome of an evolution with which ZCube is moving from simple project management to a more open vision to the world of professors, researchers and students. In this way we hope to give further support to research and innovation in Italian industry, which we believe has suffered from backwardness, because no one has believed in. Innovation results when you are not certain, and a country in difficulty does not support high-risk initiatives. We believe, however, that at this time Italy has riavvicinata the world of research and innovation and has revalued, even with recent legislative actions such as the “patent box”, which showed a bureaucracy and a bias problem the financial world to the Italian market, which in turn takes in himself great possibilities and great skills, both in the universities and among young entrepreneurs.
“
the 100,000 euro prize can be used to a startup to overcome the first 8-14 months of its initial phase. “We hope that at the end of the startup path is open to the financial world, and do not depend strictly from our investment, but this does not exclude that we will participate with further investment, at least for those projects that within our logic there seem worthy of continuation, “said yet Consonni. “We are targeting primarily at university teams who carry out a very targeted research in the areas that we have identified. If they do occur 40-50 projects would be an excellent result. We expect a significant interest from the next universities to our sites and with whom we have long relationships, but also from the rest of Italy. The Center-South is sometimes penalized in financial key but often rich and stimulating in terms of ideas, so do not be surprised if many initiatives arrive from there, where there is less chance of being approached by lenders. “
