the Brazilian judge Ruy Pinheiro of the state of Sergipe Court ordered the release of Diego Dzonan, number 1 Facebook for Latin America. Dzodan was arrested yesterday by the Narcotics Division of the Brazilian police, after the company had failed to provide the judiciary with access to WhatsApp data considered relevant to an investigation into drug trafficking. According to the court, Dzonan, imprisoned in Sao Paulo, will now be released because his detention is considered a measure of “excessive”. Facebook also had yesterday described as “disproportionate” arrest.
WhatsApp said he does not keep track of the billions of messages traveling on the platform and therefore can not provide any conversation judges. Earlier this year, moreover, the number one Jan Koum said that the company is developing an encryption end to end platform to protect even more conversations across their path from one to another smartphone.
The story involving Facebook has had great response for its resemblance to that which involved Apple in the US, with the Cupertino company that has refused to comply with the order of a court that had requested access to the iPhone’s data from one of the authors of the San Bernardino massacre. It is not the first time that the giant of Palo Alto is in conflict with the Brazilian authorities. Last December a judge had temporarily blocked the WhatsApp messaging service owned by Facebook, for failing to meet twice the data access request of some users, as reported the press, were involved in a criminal syndicate.
