coral are in danger and the cause they are sunscreens that contain a chemical able to make considerable damage to the same.
The discovery was made by a study of the environmental laboratory of Haereticus Virginia, in the United States and published in the journal “Archives of Environmental Contamination & amp; Toxicology “which shows that all products containing BP-3 , oxybenzone, as sunscreens have adverse effects on coral reefs, destroying them.
Craig Down, who for years has studied what harm sunscreens to coral , he said: “We must be careful not to use products containing BP-3 in the islands and also in areas where the conservation of coral reefs is very important. In the Caribbean because of sunscreen we have lost as much as 80% of coral reefs. Any actions, however small, could mean a tremendous help to reduce contamination by BP-3 and just save the reefs. “
It is the fault of the ‘ oxybenzone that even in small quantities causes coral bleaching and even death of the same at worst. The same substance can interfere with hormones coral newborn causing deformations to them and trapping them inside the exoskeleton. One of the most common strain is the one that causes the expansion of the mouth of the corals up to five times the standard size.
The study also showed that coral reefs end between 6 thousand and 14 thousand tons of sunscreen that in most cases the benzophenone-3 in addition to hurt nature also causes damage to our health.
Currently it is estimated that more than 3,500 companies, produce creams that contain oxybenzone used as a UV filter.
