Defeat in court for Apple. After having checked against Samsung in various legal battles, Cupertino must yield to the University of Wisconsin.
A federal jury has ordered the payment of 234 million dollars to the university for breaking some of its patents. But Apple announces it will appeal against the decision, believing the patents of the University of Wisconsin invalid and those at his disposal that can cover the technology of its processors.
The University welcomes the decision however, that “protection of the patented inventions.” According to the university Apple illegally used some of the technologies of the University in the processors of the iPad and iPhone. After the jury’s decision, Apple has revealed that the account is set high.
Cupertino believes it would be more appropriate to set a price of 7 cents for every device that mounts technology deemed illegal, for a total of 10 million dollars. The University of Wisconsin had requested $ 2.74 per unit for a total of 400 million dollars. The case concerns the processors used in the iPhone 5, 6 and 6 Plus, but also some iPad. The University of Wisconsin has advanced another lawsuit against Apple last September for violation of the same patents in the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
The University defends its patent registered 17 years ago, which it is based on technology developed by professors and students of the university. The school has sued Intel in 2008 for patent infringement. The two sides bargained last year.
“We believe our technology has preceded the times. Twenty years ago we tried to anticipate how computers would have to work today,” says Gurindar Sohi, one of the professors who developed the technology. “Our group has invested the equivalent of 11 years of work to resolve this issue.”
