In 2014 were 14,542 offenses detected, approximately 40 per day or 2 for every kilometer of coastline, an increase over the previous year when there were 14,504. The people reported or arrested were 18 thousand, while 4,777 were seizures carried out by the competent authorities.
In the ranking of the illegality of the sea priority needs to Puglia, with 3,164 offenses recorded (21.8% of the national total), followed by Sicily with 2,346 (16.1%), from Campania with 1,837 (12.6%) and Calabria with 1,370 (12.6%).
Specifically, the infringements found to problems of pollution of the sea were 4,545 (31% of the national total), which saw the involvement of more than 7 thousand people between reported and arrested (40% nationally), leading to seizures 2,741 structures corresponding to 57.4% of the national figure.
Overall, the main offenses relate to pollution of the sea due to bad treatment, sewage, oil pollution, spillage of waste of various kinds, but there are cases of illegal fishing and breaches of yachting among the pollutants, too often undervalued, there ‘s also the improper disposal of waste oils.
