CNR, environmental alarm: “A fifth of Italy is at risk of desertification” – TGCOM

– More than a fifth of the Italian territory is at risk of desertification, and about 41% of this area is located in the South of the boot. The warning is the environmental CNR, which organized the conference to Expo “Drought, land degradation and desertification in Italy and in the World”. Globally, the researchers point out, the deserts are the main symbol of a phenomenon that characterizes increasingly large areas.

Causes – “By the end of this century – said the director of the Institute for the exploitation of wood and tree species of the CNR, Mauro Centritto – the predictions are, for the Mediterranean basin, the temperature increases from 4 to 6 degrees and a significant reduction of rainfall, especially in the summer. ” He adds: “The combination of these two factors will generate strong aridity.”

Environmental Alarm – The National Research Council revealed that in the drylands of the world there are about two billion of people, concentrated to more than 70% in developing countries. “Neither Italy is excluded,” says Centritto. According to experts it is “ alarming numbers , which require immediate attention and action.”

The regions most at risk – According to the study, good part of the Italian regions are destined to turn into desert: “In Sicily, the areas that may be interesate by desertification are even 70%, in Puglia, 57%, 58% in Molise, Basilicata 55%, while in Sardinia, Marche, Emilia Romagna, Umbria, Abruzzo and Campania are between 30 and 50%. “
