Too much CO2 in the air, 2050 farewell to the pasta al dente – Palermomania.it

Lovers of pasta dishes resign: 2050 will have to say goodbye to the pasta al dente. Reason? Climate changes that await us in the next 40 years. This was stated by a study carried out between 2012 and 2013 by the Research Center for Genomics of the CRA (Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture) Fiorenzuola d’Arda (Piacenza) on the system Face (Free Air CO2 Enrichment – Enrichment of the open air with CO2) in collaboration with the Institute of Biometeorology of the National Research Council in Florence. According to the research, which simulated open field weather conditions in 2050 (an increase of CO2 to 570 parts per million), between 35 years there will be a greater yield of durum wheat, but this will have less protein, which is essential for the actual cooking of the pasta .

“The result is an increase in plant biomass and production, but with a lower protein content – experts say -. The increase in plant biomass and production is a direct result of the effect of fertilizer Co2 .

“In some varieties increases production reached even 20% – reads the text of the research -. But the protein content influence the tightness of the pasta cooking, except for a forward-looking work of genetic improvement that could create new varieties that can yield the most of the increase in atmospheric C02, avoiding or reducing the negative consequences on the quality of the product ” .

We live in a world already contaminated, and future forecasts do not improve for sure. But what is even more serious, the research proposes a genetic modification of wheat to obviate ‘”inconvenience.”

Yet it would seem that the Italian pasta, fortunately, is safe: the Barilla in fact, the first processor of wheat in the world, has developed varieties with characteristics adapted to different climates along the country.

Predictions aside, we face yet another proof that the great changes in the world affect the smallest quality of daily life of individuals. The question then arises, positive change in the future or future deterioration of the human species?
