Facebook, anonymity in an app? – Computer Point

Rome – Facebook is working on a app through which allow users to interact with each other without the need to use their real names . This is an important turning point for the social network that has made the identity of its users, its flag: indeed we must not forget that he was born as a way to connect the American college students, and a small circle of people between interconnected them and can seek online by name, and is in this way, the social network has distinguished himself from the rest of the online community characterized by pseudonyms and anonymity.

This policy has been found recently at the center of controversy following the problems experienced by Drag Queen Sister Roma and its subsequent allegations of discrimination: not only did she report that they were Sister Roma for the past 27 years and does not recognize more with the birth name of Michael Williams, but often – he said – behind the choice of a different name There is a serious need for anonymity or the simple desire to get away from suffering, or at least a past abusive relationships who want to leave. The Drag Queen has therefore been at the forefront of the instances of a large group of people, especially the LGBT community, which eventually forced the social network to apologize and to promise changes in the field.

These will arrive in the coming weeks, at least initially in the form of an app for it: is the first result of the project which Josh Miller, manager came to Facebook through the acquisition of his startup Branch that offered services to small discussion groups, is working to a year. There are no specific details on how this app will serve to Facebook to address the issue of anonymity, but it seems to offer a way to use a pseudonym all those times that you’ll want to address a question that you do not want to associate directly to their profile. Miller, after these rumors, has confirmed it is working on something, but he also pointed out that every app needs to have a purpose, as well as a premise, and then associate his work “only” anonymity could be a mistake.

Facebook in recent weeks will likely have to deal with another issue related to the identity of its users: apparently the DEA ( Drug Enforcement Agency , the police force specialized in drug-related crimes) used photos of a woman obtained from a mobile phone among the assets of a swag to create a fake profile to flush traffickers.

The victim of this peculiar identity theft proceeded to denounce the police officer in charge and, as the social network has already taken steps to block the offending profile, the DEA continues to reiterate that it has all the right to act in such a way because the woman had given consent to the use in the investigation of his phone and the information contained therein.
