The inhabitants of the islands Faroe were tired of waiting for the arrival of Google that mappasse the territory with the service Street View and have, therefore, it decided to fend for themselves through a totally unusual using one of the most important economic activities of the island, the sheep . The islanders have therefore launched the Sheep View 360 a 360 degree mapping system that uses no Google Car to map areas of the island but rather the sheep.
project is much more concrete than what you could imagine. An islander has created a special belt that allows to 5 sheep to be equipped with a camera 360 degrees . Sheep, however, will not be left to graze independently, but will be conducted by a pastor of the island. Thanks to photos taken by these cameras and the combination with the GPS coordinates obtained from the cameras themselves, the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands will send Google the shots to be loaded into the Street View service. Sheep View of the team 360 until it was able to map 5 resorts on the island and has also recorded some video 360 degrees that show the beauty of the place to explore with the “calm” of a sheep .
to highlight a curious fact, the Faroe islands can count on more than 49 000 inhabitants but especially on over 80,000 sheep. Besides helping, of course, to promote the island from the point of view of tourism, the project is part of a campaign to convince Google to come to the island to complete the mapping project. To promote the project, the islanders have also launched the hashtag #wewantgooglestreetview .
