– “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet”. And ‘this is the motto of the 2015 World Day of the oceans, established by the UN on 8 June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. There are about 400 events organized in the five continents to denounce the disastrous situation of marine ecosystems, plagued by overfishing, pollution and acidification. At stake are the salvation of the planet and a massive source of income: according to WWF fact oceans are worth $ 24 trillion and represent one of the ten largest economies in the world.

Investment tripled – To confirm the economic importance of the oceans is an analysis by Vu University Amsterdam at the request of WWF: for every dollar invested in the establishment of a ‘marine protected area, the amount of revenue is three times the initial investment in terms of creating jobs, goods and services. Increased protection of the oceans would thus lead to economic benefits of between 490 and 900 billion dollars over the period 2015-2050. WWF calls for the percentage of protected oceans from marine protected areas to increase to 30% by 2030.

Save the oceans: a challenge to be overcome at all costs – But Beyond the economic issue, the oceans are a vital resource for the life of all ecosystems on the planet. Do not reduce the environmental impact of human activities would “condemn” our seas, causing untold damage on the climate, flora and fauna. The huge amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere is rapidly increasing ocean acidity and according to a study by the Royal Society this phenomenon could increase up to 300% before the end of the century. Currently it is protected under 4% of the entire ocean mass.
