The new Galaxy Note 7 Samsung offers another biometric system that increases safety for users. In addition to the traditional print reader it is in fact the scanners iris , which can be used for unlocking the phablet, Samsung Pay payments and protection of personal documents in the Secure Folder. The Korean manufacturer has published a post detailing its operation.
The iris scan is a biometric identification method using iris images stored (in encrypted form) on the device to recognize you. The image captured by the LED Infrared and Iris Room is compared with that stored on your smartphone. Samsung has chosen an IR LED because the infrared images are not affected by the color of the eyes, and ambient light. Samsung’s proprietary technology also leverages the light emitted by the screen Galaxy Note 7, enabling the recognition even in low light.
These components provide fast, accurate player with less false acceptances compared with fingerprint reader . The IR LED has been certified IEC 62471 , so there’s no implication for health. In any case, the scanner is automatically disabled if the eyes are too close together and if the exposure is too long.
As mentioned, the system can be used for unlocking the phablet, to access to personal data in the safe folder and mobile payments. Samsung will provide the APIs to third-party developers which can then integrate support for the scanner in their app. The manufacturer has already begun cooperating with some banks to add support for mobile banking app.
