The first (and most important) of the three laws of robotics by Isaac Asimov says bluntly that “ A robot may not injure a human being nor can afford that, because of inaction, a human being to come to harm. ” But this is only a rule that applies in the novels of the famous writer, not in reality: robots can in fact do much harm to a human being, and in California it has just been built one that can “consciously decide” to do so.

to create was the expert robotics and artist Alexander Reben of Stochastic Labs Berkeley, who has decided to create his own work after noticing how are many people in the world to be afraid of robots and artificial intelligence . According to the inventor this is because, as explained in Fast Company, the machines have the ability to inflict physical pain, not to mention that we often hear of robots that will steal all our jobs and maybe you will take the entire planet.
“No one has ever made a robot intentionally done to hurt someone ,” explains Reben. “I wanted to make a robot that can do this really existed. This is important: take him to the realm of the experiments imagined to reality, because once there is something we will have to compare. It is urgent, you can not just pontificating about” .
Reben ironically named his robot “First Law” ( “First Law”), with reference to the above laws of robotics Asimov. The car, a black box with a mechanical arm, operates in effect even against the Second Law, which states how the “ a robot must obey orders given it by human beings , where such orders would conflict with the First law. “
First law is able to” decide “whether or not causing a small cut to the person who has the audacity to rest a finger on a corner of the box. In fact the choice is completely random and has nothing to do with the “decisions” in the sense in which we understand human beings. In the video found in the bottom of the article the machine actually has “decided” to hurt the owner of the finger : some might find the scene rather unpleasant, although the action is not particularly bloody.

the fear that intelligence artificial might turn against us is still a theme subject of discussion for a long time, and hardly the work of Reben add much to the debate. Just a few days ago Google DeepMind scientists have published a paper which describes how a “big red button”, whose purpose would be to block the AI systems to prevent them from harming themselves and what they around.
